The Value of the Literature Review, Even for a Short Piece

A full academic literature review is overkill for most short pieces, but the underlying habit, checking what has already been established or argued on a topic before writing about it, protects a writer from unknowingly repeating an error or restating a point already well covered elsewhere.
Even a brief version of this step, a focused search through existing coverage and available reference material, can reveal a gap worth filling or a common misconception worth directly addressing, either of which sharpens a short piece considerably before a single word of the piece is actually drafted.
Skipping this step to save time often costs more time later, when a published piece turns out to duplicate existing work or, worse, repeats an error that a slightly wider initial search would have caught early on in the process. This step also builds a writer's own credibility with editors and readers alike, since a piece that clearly situates itself against existing coverage reads as more considered and trustworthy.
