The Role of White Space and Section Breaks

A section break signals a shift, in time, place, perspective or subject, and gives a reader a natural pause to absorb what came before, functioning as a kind of structural punctuation that dense, unbroken prose simply cannot provide on its own no matter how well written.
Overusing breaks can fragment a piece into disconnected pieces that never build genuine momentum, while underusing them can exhaust a reader with an unrelenting wall of text that offers no natural resting point across an otherwise substantial piece for the reader. Reading a draft aloud, noticing where breath and attention naturally want to pause, often reveals where a break belongs more reliably than counting words or paragraphs against some fixed, arbitrary rule.
The right rhythm depends on a piece's length and complexity, but a useful general test is whether each section, once separated by a break, could stand as a coherent unit in its own right before connecting meaningfully to whatever section happens to follow it next.
